Unfortunately for me, I did not really know my father until I was 38. I found him to be funny and intelligent. We had very little time together but I am glad for those few times we got together before he passed away. -JNR

Richard 'Dick' Ray
Richard "Dick" Leroy Ray, 65, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at his home in Southern Pines, N.C. He was born Oct. 23, 1941, in Hood River, Ore., to Virgil and Lorena King Ray.
Dick was a career military man in the U.S. Navy, serving in Vietnam. He enjoyed bowling and reading; plus had a tremendous sense of humor. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly, and a son, Michael.
Dick is survived by his wife, Patricia Huff Ray; parents, Virgil and Lorena Ray, of Hood River; brother, Earl Ray, and his wife, Gale, of Beaverton, Ore.; and sister, Sharron Rath, and her husband, John, of Hood River.
He is also survived by his children, Karen Anderson and her husband, Jay, of Vancouver, Wash., Richard Ray, of Umatilla, Ore., John Ray, of Oxnard, Calif., Virgil Ray, and his wife, Lesa, of Hood River, Erik Hall, of Seattle, Wash., and Ingrid Smedley, and her husband, Bryan, of Jackson Center, Ohio; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one nephew and niece.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 1, at 3 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines, with Chaplain Cherri Wheeler officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Health Foundation, Oncology, 150 Applecross road, Pinehurst, N.C. 28374.
